Another Eurovision comment

Another year, another Eurovision song contest.

I feel a bit strange writing about it when I didn’t watch it (who in their right mind does these days?), but I have heard a few of the tunes thanks to the wonders of the internet, seen plenty of pictures of acts and generally seen enough to form a sufficient opinion to pass comment.

That comment being: crap!

I blogged last year when the Finnish Heavy Metal band won, questioning what the point was and if I’m being fair I think I was a little snidely. Obviously it is loved across Europe and especially in the Eastern bloc who are now winning almost every year. Let’s face it, our (and all Western European countries who started the competition) day is over. Perhaps we should leave it to them – might as well, they won’t vote for us anyway.

I also notice that it is generally completely accepted these days that it is a big old gay night. Serbia won this year, the singer looks like a 5ft dyke (although I cannot say this for certain and I apologise to her if I am completely mistaken), and from the clip I saw, her all-female backing singers seemed to carry out a rather Sapphic routine around her. A Ukranian drag artist came second. I think that says it all.

Of the other songs I heard clips of, I can’t help thinking that plagiarism is rife these days. The Greek boys sounded an awful lot like Ricky Martin’s ‘Living la Vida loca’ whilst the Swedish Glam rock outfit reminded me a lot of ‘Love grows where my Rosemary Goes’. Our entry just sounded like the biggest pile of crap ever recorded and I’m not surprised to read that we came second last – we don’t need the excuse of having no friends in Europe, we just need to put our hands up and admit it was the worst thing ever.

Let’s pull out gracefully now and leave Eurovision to the new Eastern generation.
