More gays coming out

So, Lance Bass of former top US boyband NSync has come out as gay, citing his reason for staying in the closet during their years at then top as not wanting to risk ruining the other guys’ career. Probably fair comment considering how the gay issue is still such a big thing in the more central and southern States. I have to admit, NSync (there’s a comedy * in there somewhere but I have no idea where) never really registered on my radar but on the odd occasion I saw them I always assumed he was gay anyway, I mean, look at those eyebrows!

It is, however, yet another example of there being a hidden gay in a boyband. Boyzone had Stephen Gately, Westlife has one, there was lots of speculation about three members of Take That (scandalous gossip, I’m sure), and it seems every minor league, one small hit and that’s it boy band has one. What does this tell us? Gays are everywhere, and instead of 1 in 10, maybe the better statistic is 1 in 5? That maybe we should start looking for the gay in every boy band or 4-5 piece male band.

Tabloids during the Pete Doherty/Kate Moss moments were full of ex’s selling their stories of Pete swinging both ways, so that’s the Libertines and Babyshambles covered. Popbitch very kindly published a link to Dane Bowyers of boy band Another Level’s US version of a gaydar-style profile where he states he’s looking for men and women. If I think about it I could go on.

But good for Lance, I guess. I only wish the gay one in any band could just once be the one I might vaguely fancy. By the way, is his surname pronounced Bass as in fish or Bass as in guitar? And is his former (quite chubby) ex bandmate’s surname really unfortunately aptly pronounced Fat-One?

back again

I know, I know. A blog is for life, not just for Christmas, but I've been so up against it at work I haven't had any time to write down my thoughts or what I've been up to.

I'm working on a big one but in the meantime, I'd just like to say that last night Mac and I went to see Camille at the Scala and it was one of the most astonishing shows I have seen in ages. She was utterly stunning, the audience were totally mesmerised, and she closed the show by moving out onto the street and doing a brief a capella moment. I wish I could see her again tonight.

More shows to be reviewed either at length or in a more cursory nature later, including: Decemberists, Bad Plus, Homefires, Roddy Frame, Def Leppard, Pet Shop Boys, T in the Park, Animal Collective and Richard Swift.

No comic reviews for a bit, nothing out of the ordinary to write about.
